The ruling Alianza Nacionalista Republicana
(Arena) is moving into unchartered territory. Clearly anxious about the revival
of the Frente Farabundo Martí para la Liberación Nacional (FMLN) as a moderate
left-wing party, Arena is also presenting itself as an agent for change. The
party leadership committee, Coena, selected a businessman, Arturo Zablah, with
strong ties to the moderate left as running mate for Arena's presidential
candidate, Rodrigo Avila. It is not inconceivable that Arena could even secure
an alliance with a left-of-centre party. This would be unprecedented, and would
go some way towards reducing the polarisation that characterises politics in El
Salvador.
